HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

The New Year is less than a week away and as celebrations continue, there's one area of business that is sure to see a rush.

There's one sound people like to hear when they're bringing in the new year - bottles popping.

"Everyone's happy and you know, it's just a wonderful season," Shawn Guider, owner of Shawn Petit Bois Liquors said.

Guider says her sales rush begins before Thanksgiving and runs straight until Mardi Gras festivities, so she prepares well in advance.

"We bought early. Over bought some things, under bought some things," Guider said.

Guider says lower gas prices may be one of the reasons she's been seeing her customers more often, but that's not all. She says the refund checks Mississippi Power customers received also gave them a start on shopping.

"They're so happy about it. They decided rather putting it back into their electricity bill, they were just going to have a fabulous Christmas because it has been really lean the last few years," Guider said.

Guider says the reason for the season is family and friends, and her customers agree.

"I enjoy the family time, just to spend time with the kids. I work a lot, so I enjoy the time off," Dorin Jean said.

Although the sales may increase, there's also an increased concern for safety. Guider, along with local law enforcement, urge people to be responsible while out having fun.

"Wait until you get to your destination. Do not drink and drive," Guider said.

Mississippi Highway Patrol's Christmas Holiday Travel Enforcement Period ends Sunday at midnight. MHP officials say they will also be out in full force through the new year to make sure everyone is driving responsibly.
