GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Heavy rain during the last couple of days is causing flooding in parts of South Mississippi.

In the area off Hwy. 605 in North Gulfport, residents were taking precautions Wednesday to stay high and dry. Additionally, some roads near the Biloxi River weren't passable; including River Road.

Mary Favre's car couldn't make it to her house, forcing her to park on high ground along with others in similar situations. Favre was able to get a ride home in her husband's truck, but doesn't know if she'll be staying there long since she has Christmas plans to keep.

"I am leaving to go home to Cleveland, Ohio on Friday morning and I need to be able to make my plane out of New Orleans at 7:10 in the morning, so the water better go down," said Favre.

Just in case, Favre has a plan to avoid getting trapped.

"If worse comes to worse I'm going to get a little boat, get my luggage across and stay in New Orleans for the night to get there," said Favre. "I will go home to see my grandchildren no matter what, water or not."

Although a flooded road is in sight of Gulfport resident Barbra Parks' house, her family isn't changing their holiday plans and she's not worried about her home being flooded.

"When we get lots of rain the river will come up, but it's really no big concern because we stayed here during Hurricane Katrina, and the water came up and went around the house and everything but it didn't come up here on our heel," said Parks.

The Biloxi River is expected to crest at 6:00 a.m. Thursday. For up-to-date information on weather in South Mississippi, visit the WLOX.com weather page
