GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Although weather forced some airlines to adjust the times of thousands of flights to try to prevent delays, not all could be avoided.

Even so, travelers at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport say they had had a pleasant holiday travel experience.

Austin Hampton is happy to be heading to Florida to see his family for the holidays, and remembers the times when Christmas flights were too expensive for his budget.

"Nothing can beat being in person," said Hampton. "Being able to touch them and kiss them and give them a hug."

There were plenty of hugs at the airport as people welcomed loved ones with open arms.

"I'm waiting for my baby brother." said Kim Williams. "He's not such a baby but he's still to me, and I haven't spent a Christmas with him in 40 years so, I'm way looking forward to spending Christmas with him."

However, not everyone waiting at the airport was excited. Ashton and Griffin Duval were trying to find ways to fight boredom after their mom told them she needed to retrieve lost luggage.

Ashton said, "Our mom forgot her bag on the airplane. So someone returned it so we're here to try to look for it.  Yeah, it's kind of a little boring."

What the kids didn't know was that they were in for a big surprise. Instead of suitcase, off the plane came a new puppy just in time for Christmas .

"We never got a pet in our life besides a fish. That's our first real land animal," Griffin said.

An airline trade organization expects 38 million passengers to travel Dec. 18 through Jan. 3  The average flight is expected to be 90 percent full.
