MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

Instead of snow falling for Christmas, South Mississippi has seen a lot of rain.

On Rose Dr. in Moss Point, inches of water is collecting on the street; some reaching people's houses.

"You put all your money in things like this, you're suppose to live happy. You're not suppose to wake up with water floating on your floor, you're not suppose to wake up with sewer coming down," George Stallworth said.

Stallworth says he has to deal with water from the street flooding into his home every time it rains, costing him anywhere between $30 to $40 to buy clean-up supplies.

"Nothing but water. And every time that water comes in here it damages my doors, it damages my walls and then after the water leaves out. It leaves mold," Stallworth said.

The city of Moss Point recently launched a flood prevention program to eliminate the flooding concerns. However, the recent storms that swept through the neighborhood over-matched the new system.

Residents on the street say waking up to the water mess is disappointing, and they're ready to give up trying to protect their property.

"They just finished them about three weeks ago," Tommy Davis said.  "Oh, it's not very good. I'm going to be selling the house," Davis said.

Stallworth added, "If you're not getting benefit out of the money that you're putting in a town, it's best to move out of that town and go do better. That's the way I feel."

The drainage problem was complete in August, and cost the city $1.4 million to complete.
