SCAM ALERT: Phone calls target South Mississippi power customers

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

If you get a call from someone saying you're late paying your power bill, hang up! That's the advice from those who issue the power bills in South Mississippi.

Officials at Singing River Electric and Mississippi Power say scammers are actively targeting residents and small businesses in South Mississippi. The calls are coming from a variety of phone numbers with both 228 and 601 area codes.

On one call, a man claiming to be a Singing River Electric employee demanded payment for a past due electricity bill over the phone to avoid disconnection. The scammers usually ask customers to purchase a pre-paid debit card and provide the account number on the card. With access to the account number, the criminals use the money on the pre-paid card for their own benefit.

Officials want to get the word out that none of our local power providers do business this way.

"We never call people to tell them they're delinquent, and we would never ask them to purchase a payment card," said Lorri Freeman with Singing River Electric.

Often, those who get the calls are being targeted because they're senior citizens or speak English as a second language.

If you or your business receives one of these calls, hang up and call your local power company. Do not redial the number that just called you.

Singing River Electric Power Association - (601) 947-4211 or (228) 497-1313
Mississippi Power Company - 1-800-532-1502
Coast Electric Power Association - 1-877-769-2372

Mississippi Power officials also remind you they'll never send an employee to your home or business to collect payment in person. If an employee has a service-related reason to visit, they will ALWAYS:

  • Wear a Mississippi Power uniform or apparel with logo.
  • Arrive in a Mississippi Power vehicle with our logo.
  • Present a photo I.D. with the Mississippi Power logo.
