BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Some military members took on a holiday mission this year -- to bring Christmas joy to dozens of Biloxi students whose families could not afford to buy them gifts. They helped distribute the wrapped presents Tuesday morning.

Christmas joy came early for the Gomez family. Eight-year-old Yoselin could barely contain her excitement.

"This is mine," said Yoselin, as she held up a package. "I'm excited to open it. I want to open it right now."

The Gomez children are among 35-students at Jeff Davis Elementary whose families are struggling this holiday season. The school placed their names and wishes on an Angel Tree. Members of the Wing Staff Agencies at Keesler Air Force Base adopted every angel, or donated money to the cause.

"I have kids myself, so I know how much joy they get out of Christmas and seeing what Santa Claus brings and opening the gifts. Just to be able to give a little of that back to some other families that may not have it, it's a great feeling," said Wing Staff Agencies Commander Jayson Cabell.

The boxes, more than 100 in all, contained surprises like electronic tablets, remote controlled cars, clothes, shoes, even drones. There were also several bikes.

"The families and children are just filled with so much joy in them to see in feeling more comfortable and happy knowing that Friday morning when they wake up, they'll have presents and experience the joy that most of us have always been able to have," said Biloxi School District Social Worker Gail Esters.

As the parents came to the school to pick up the gifts, you could see the gratitude in their eyes and hear the emotion in their voices.

"Bless them. Big time bless them. It's very heart wrenching, wasn't expecting it," said Arnold Bergeron. "Children got something to look forward to that fathers like me, a single father, raising little ones, having hard times, this is truly a blessing."

"I was like, 'Oh my God! It's going to be a Christmas this year.' It's a blessing though," said Tracey Price, who has three children.

Making Christmas wishes come true, another Keesler mission accomplished. This was the third year that the Wing Staff Agencies has adopted Jeff Davis Elementary. The group also bought gifts for 14-students at North Bay Elementary in Biloxi.
