City of Bay St. Louis undergoes independent audit

Happening tonight, the City of Bay St. Louis is undergoing an independent audit ordered by the U.S. Department of Justice. Mayor Les Fillingame confirms to WLOX News that an auditing firm based in New Orleans is going through the city's books.

The auditors are looking at the city's police forfeiture fund, which an earlier audit indicated is short by about $300,000. This is money the city receives following drug busts and other criminal activities.

Earlier this year, the Department of Justice sent investigators to the city to look at that fund. That was when the independent audit was ordered.

According to the earlier audit, much of the police forfeiture money was placed in the city's general fund, which is a violation of justice department regulations.

Meanwhile, the city clerk is leaving that job in the coming days, and questions about the city’s financial future are continuing to mount, especially from some members of the city council.

This is a story we'll continue to follow both on-air and online.
