JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A South Mississippi woman is recovering from facial surgery after authorities say she was beaten by her boyfriend over the weekend.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said deputies responded to a domestic assault call on Ben Road around 6 p.m. Sunday. Neighbors told investigators a man was assaulting a woman at 15818 Ben Road.

Ezell said deputies spoke with the victim, who had severe injuries to her face. The woman reportedly identified 32-year-old Johnathan Wayne Bankester as her attacker.

The victim told investigators she was in a dating relationship with Bankester, and he left the scene before deputies arrived.

Ezell said the woman was taken to Ocean Springs Hospital to be treated for her injuries, but she was later transferred to another facility to undergo surgery.

Ezell said Bankester was arrested at his home on Ben Road just hours after the assault. He is charged with domestic violence aggravated assault.

Bankester made his initial court appearance Thursday, and Judge T. Larry Wilson set his bond at $25,000.

If convicted of domestic violence aggravated assault, Bankester faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
