Editorial: Courthouse nativity scene

We are proud that the Harrison County Supervisors stood up to a legal threat over a nativity scene displayed inside the county courthouse in Gulfport.

A group calling itself the American Humanist Association contends the display is an endorsement of one religion and leaves others feeling unwelcome.  We think this demand to remove a harmless nativity scene is pushing freedom of religion issue way too far.

Christianity is not being forced on citizens as a state religion nor are others being persecuted because of their faiths.  We agree that freedom of religion is a fundamental right.  But this nativity display does not violate that right.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
