Organizers for this year’s Christmas on the Bayou Bernard boat parade are asking for boaters to register Thursday night for the weekend event.

For those wanting to show off their Christmas spirit and their boats, you’re asked to come to the captains meeting at The Dock restaurant in Gulfport at 6 p.m.

Another opportunity boaters will have at the meeting is donating money for a South Mississippi entrepreneur who’s battling cancer.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen many fundraisers done on the Coast to help Steve Johnson, also known as Scuba Steve, during his fight with cancer. Those registering for Saturday’s parade will have the chance to show their support, too.

Event organizers say donations made in his honor will be matched by the committee up to $2,000. Also at Saturday’s event, friends of Scuba Steve will be selling Scuba Steve T-shirts.

Johnson is battling stage 4 colorectal cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

The Gulfport boat parade starts Saturday at 6 p.m. on Bayou Bernard. This is the 15th year of the parade, and it continues to grow every year.

This year, organizers are expecting up to 50 decorative boats to glide down the bayou. The parade is expected to last two hours.
