BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Tourism leaders on the Mississippi Gulf Coast say 2015 was a strong year, and they expect continued growth in the future. Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast Executive Director Renee Areng said the Coast is well positioned to become a premier tourism destination.

During the group's annual meeting today, she talked about the development along the Coast this past year. That growth includes the opening of MGM Park, the addition of new restaurants and hotel rooms and yesterday's opening of the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort.

Tourism board chairman Rich Westfall said all that recent development is a good indicator of future success.

"I think we're on track for something great," he told the crowd at the Coliseum Convention Center.

Areng said 2015 was "our five percent year," as she pointed out that the number of hotel rooms, gaming revenue and revenue at Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast all increased about five percent.

When asked about the biggest challenge facing tourism or where the Coast may be lacking, Areng said we need more airline service to bring visitors to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Steve Phillips was at that tourism this meeting. He will have a full recap later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
