Termite repairs underway at Beauvoir

Termites have taken a bite out of Beauvoir. The scaffolding around the Last Home of Jefferson Davis is a sign that work to repair the damage is underway. Crews are busy working to replace the wooden porch around the mansion that has been devoured by Formosan termites.
Beauvoir director Greg Stewart said at first workers thought the damage wasn't too bad, but as they began to replace the wooden structure they noticed the termites had done extensive damage, requiring the entire porch to be replaced at a cost of $250,000.
Stewart said the termite trouble has left  more than a few disappointed brides who like the picturesque backdrop for wedding ceremonies and photos. "They've been understanding and done pictures in other places on the grounds," said Stewart.
The porch is relatively new, because it was rebuilt as part of the Beauvoir restoration after Hurricane Katrina.  The work is expected to be finished in the spring.
