HAPPENING TONIGHT: Brightwell to be remembered at beachside memorial

One week ago today, Julie Brightwell was murdered. Tonight, her memory will be honored on the beach across from the Waffle House she worked and where she was killed.

Julie Brightwell had many friends. All one has to do is go on social media or to get a real sense of what she meant to so many people.

The vigil tonight begins at 5:15pm. Among those who will speak include the person who has become the spokesperson Brightwell's story: long-time friend Linda Kilpatrick. Also scheduled to talk will be Eugene Nash, Brightwell's boyfriend for more than a year, and Brightwell's Aunt, Diane Hickman of California, who on Friday assumed authority over family decisions.

The vigil was organized by Waffle House executives.

Officials say Brightwell was murdered after she told a man he couldn't smoke in the restaurant. The man then pulled out a pistol and shot her as she crouched down behind the counter to hide.

The man charged in Brightwell's murder, Johnny Max Mount, remains in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $2 million bond.
Funeral arrangements so far are incomplete.
