BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The spirit of giving shined at a Biloxi casino on Thursday when a group of employees pitched-in to pack thousands of pounds of food.

Hard Rock Biloxi employees sorted and packed close to 2,400 pounds of food. They filled bags with easy-to-prepare food, from Ramen noodles and beef jerky, to canned goods and single-serve cereal packages.

"Our little assembly line was just a going and it's really invigorating. We want to get it all done and it warms your heart, because you know it's going to a good place," said Cortney Hyer, Hard Rock Sales and Catering Coordinator.

The bags of food will go to Biloxi Junior High. Every Friday, the bags will be placed in the backpacks of 20 needy children at the school so they will have something to eat over the weekend. Their generosity will help feed hungry Biloxi students for the rest of the school year.

For some employees, the project was personal.

"Biloxi Jr. High....that's where I went. I do remember a lot of kids growing up, didn't have food at home, starving by lunchtime, so this is something I wanted to do make sure that doesn't happen anymore," said Hyer.

"I have grand kids that go to Biloxi Jr. High, Biloxi Sr. High, so it really matters to me," said Hard Rock Dealer Connie Penuel. "This way, you feel like you're giving back to them and the kids mean a lot."

Hard Rock also donated $2,500 so the Bay Area Food Bank could purchase all the food. But it takes the employee's helping hands to prepare the food for delivery.

"They go out of their way. They came here on their off day to help me pack these bags. We did over 720 bags and we're really thankful for them," said Sarah Malone with the Bay Area Food Bank.

The volunteers showed when it comes to helping hungry children, they really rock. This was the fifth year that Hard Rock Biloxi has teamed-up with the Bay Area Food Bank to support its Backpack Program.
