DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) -

Part of Diamondhead is on its way to becoming greener, and it's all thanks to the Hattiesburg Youth Challenge Corps.

The group partnered with Keep Diamondhead Beautiful to plant trees on Diamondhead Drive Wednesday. The organization plans to eventually have an avenue of oaks along the entire eight-mile road.

Organizers say the project calls for an estimated additional 120 trees to plant, and thanks to the volunteers, the 25 trees they planted was the first step.

"The city crews have all kind of other work they have to do, and we're just a group of volunteers with Keep Diamondhead beautiful, and we can't do this kind of work," said Penny Crawford, Keep Diamondhead Beautiful secretary. "So, this is wonderful to have these young men. They're so enthusiastic. They're so helpful."

Keep Diamondhead Beautiful says it is trying to put a plan in place for those interested in donating for memorial trees.

The Mississippi State Legislature is back in session and as usual a fight is brewing over money. Still unresolved is what to do with  $750 million coming from BP over 17 years because of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. To the people here on the coast, there is no question that all of the money should be spent on projects in South Mississippi. But so far, the powers in Jackson and the rest of the state won't agree to that.
