ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) -

Final preparations are underway for a big celebration to showcase the talents of some Jackson County students. St. Martin High will host its 10th annual Fine Arts Gala Thursday night.

The students will help raise awareness and funds to support the arts. The St. Martin High choir rehearsed several holiday songs Wednesday for a big public performance.

"I'm really excited. This is my favorite concert that we have," said St. Martin High senior Courtney Walker.

In the next hallway, art students were turning trash into personal masterpieces. At a time when programs like ceramics and music are being cut in many schools, the fine arts program at St. Martin High keeps growing.

One part is due to higher enrollment. The other is to meet the needs of students who have different talents and interests.

"I've met so many great people being in the art department, so many great friends in the band. I also think it's a great way for you to express yourself creatively," said Gina Khuu, St. Martin High senior.

Thursday night, the students will put their colorful artwork, dance routines and powerful vocals on display at the Fine Arts Gala.

"Oh, it's an amazing showcase of young talent and budding talent. We're going to be able to see some of these young artists who are 14 that we know are going to make a name for themselves in five to six years," said St. Martin High art teacher Angela Heise.

The event will also raise money to fund uniforms, band competitions and specialty supplies for the visual arts classes.

"Sometimes, we don't have the money that we need, and a fundraiser like this allows us to shore up those gaps," said Heise.

The students will get to sing the praises of their peers, and let their own creativity shine. This year's gala will also feature a school-wide art contest, a T-shirt sale, a dance and theater performances.

It runs Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the school gym. Admission is $2.
