Coast Gets Ready For Great American Cleanup

Volunteers are needed for what's being called "the biggest clean-up in America". The Harrison County Beautification Commission will hold the Great American Clean-up, starting April 20 through April 28.

Businesses, church groups, and other organizations are being asked to do the following:

  • "pick-up" litter around roads, beaches and parks.
  • "spruce-up" areas outside of buildings, businesses and homes.
  • plant vegetation so it can "grow-up".
  • "boost-up" litter awareness.

Volunteers who pick up trash may find a treasure. Jennifer McLaughlin, Director of the Harrison County Beautification Commission, says it's an incentive called "riches in the ditches". Anyone who finds a golden egg while they're participating in the cleanup can turn the egg in for $10 in cash. They can claim their reward by bringing the egg to the Great American Celebration at 2 p.m. on April 28 at the Orange Grove Lyons Club.

Anyone who wants to participate in the Great American Clean-Up, can call the Harrison County Beautification Commission at 214-1405. Volunteers can pick up trash bags and supplies at the Harrison County Courthouse on 23rd Avenue in Gulfport.
