Report: Cost of Kemper Co. power plant increases by $62M

The estimated cost of Mississippi Power’s Kemper County lignite plant has increased by about $62 million, according to a project status report filed with the Mississippi Public Service Commission on Tuesday.

According to the power company, the additional costs are geared toward resources needed for testing and start-up activities. Mississippi Power officials said the cost increase will not be passed on to rate payers.

A spokesman with the power company said the plant is now in its operational testing phase. With the tests, the company has identified some changes and repairs that need to be made before the system can be placed into service.

Mississippi Power officials expect the coal gasification portion of the plant to be fully operational by the first half of 2016. The total estimated cost of the plant is now more than $6.4 billion.
