PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

On Wednesday, the Visions of Sugarplums program took dozens of Pascagoula children shopping, and let them pick out what presents they'd love to see under the tree.

Makayla Harris and her brother Jacob were among 24 children given the chance to go shopping for for Christmas gifts their families might not otherwise be able to afford.

"Some kids, they don't have as much as other kids do," said Makayla. "They'll come up here and find some cools things that they'll like, and have fun with it."

Jacob added, "It was nice because other kids don't have stuff. And they did this to make kids happy. "

Each child could select whatever he or she wanted within a $300 budget. However, Turf Masters Lawn Care, which sponsors the shopping trip, wants children to learn about the giving side of Christmas.

"One of the prerequisites or stipulations is they must buy something for someone else,"said Steve Jordan, owner. "That is the easiest thing for them to do. I heard one a minute ago that said, 'I want to go buy for mama, I want to go buy for mama.' The counselor had to convince her she needed to finish her shopping for herself first. So that's the joy."

Volunteers helped the kids shop and say they loved seeing the little faces light up.

"It's been very eye opening to see these kids and they're very nice and respectful towards me. They're very grateful for the experience that they're getting," Kyla Versiga said.

Organizers say the gifts will be delivered a few days before Christmas. The children who participated are chosen by the city of Pascagoula and the school district.
