Gumbo, crab claws and seafood casserole will be on many holiday tables in South Mississippi.

And on the day before the holiday, local seafood shops were slammed with business. Katie Coakley and her cousins from Pascagoula will be bringing home the seafood for Thanksgiving.

They're among the many picking-up holiday orders at Quality Poultry & Seafood in Biloxi.

“We do like seafood. We’re from the coast,” she said.

With Biloxi once known as the "seafood capital of the world", fresh shrimp and crab on holiday tables is steeped in tradition.

“You got a cooler?  Just bring it in and we'll ice it down for you,” said Jim Gunkel, to a waiting customer.

Shannon Wilkerson looks forward to a seafood spread during the holiday.

“Crab claws. Crab meat. And shrimp and oysters,” he recited, “We don't do much turkey.”

Though turkey may still be the star for many Thanksgiving feasts, shrimp and crab and oysters will play strong supporting roles on local holiday tables.

“Everybody's making their fresh gumbo. Peeled shrimp and head on shrimp and crab meat,” said Andrew Gunkel, with Quality Seafood. “Oh yeah, and don't forget your oyster dressing. Everybody loves their oyster dressing.”

And it's not just locals who'll be enjoying these seafood treats.  Many relatives will also be lucky enough to get a taste of the coast.

“The shrimp will be on the table, but the oysters will be going to Pennsylvania. The oysters are for family back in Pennsylvania,” said Rick Quay, from Ocean Springs.

Enjoy your roast bird on Turkey Day, while many others will be savoring the seafood.
