GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, which means it's crunch time when it comes to stocking up on all the items that will be on your turkey day menu.

“We're going to our son's for Thanksgiving with his family, and all that, so it ought to be a blast,” said Hank Coolidge.

Even though Coolidge isn't hosting the big meal for his family, he still has some advice for shoppers when it comes to scoring a deal on that long grocery list.

“Pay attention to the paper, pay attention to the sales, and get in when they say while they last, get here quick,” said Coolidge.

Most people know just how expensive that grocery bill can be this time of year. That's why shoppers say they choose their store wisely.

“I budget everything I do, but Winn Dixie, prices have been really well here,” said Marty Nuijens

Winn Dixie Store Manager, Michael Moore, says they do their best to keep the hot ticket items on sale in the days and weeks leading up to the holiday and they have already seen the crowds.

“It started early last week. We've had tremendous response to our ads, people's been coming in buying the ads and then all the key ingredients that you need for your Thanksgiving feast,” said Moore.

Moore says the popular items are of course turkey, ham, gravy mixes, and pies, but coast natives tend to add a little seafood to the menu.

“A lot of people make oyster dressing, which we do sell oysters and a lot of seafood platters as far as like your shrimp platters and crab meat platters, and what not. They tend to sell very well this time of year also,” said Moore.

Moore added that last minute shoppers should be careful not to wait too late, because the turkey needs time to thaw.
