Friday Night Football Showdown: The State title chase continues for Coast teams

Last Friday all four teams from the Region 4-6A ranks were eliminated in the first-round of the Class 6A playoffs.  Three of the four Region 8-4A teams won second-round playoff games and two of the Region 4-5A teams advanced into the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.  Resurrection continues a run at the class 1A state title and will be on the road Friday.

Let's begin with Class 5A.  The Pearl River Central Blue Devils have reeled off 11 wins in 12 games and will have the home field advantage hosting the 9 and 3 Wayne County War Eagles.  PRC head coach Eric Collins gets the most out of his players and they have responded all season long. Three of his running backs have all rushed for more than a thousand yards this season.  Former Ocean Springs head coach Todd Mangum has Wayne County in the hunt for the Class 5A state championship combining an explosive offense and stingy defense.

The Wayne County-Pearl River Central survivor will advance to the Class 5A South State title game next Friday to face the Pascagoula-Laurel winner.  Both the Panthers and Golden Tornadoes have each compiled 9-3 records.  Laurel loves to throw the football behind Keon Howard who enters the playoff game with 32 passing touchdowns.  The Panthers defense will receive a stern test. Pascagoula loves ball control running behind senior Reginald Hunter.

Two local teams clash in the Class 4A South State semifinals tonight.  St. Stanislaus (9-3) travels to Dantzler Stadium facing the Moss Point Tigers (7-5).  The Rockachaws beat the Tigers 41-14 during the regular season, but since that loss Moss Point has started to click, especially during the playoffs.  The St. Stanislaus defense will have to try and contain a solid running attack.  On the other side of the ball, St. Stanislaus quarterback Myles Brennan will unleash the Rockachaws air assault.  The Tigers defense must find some way to pressure Brennan, however when he feels heat, Myles has the ability to avoid the rush and find open receivers.

The St. Stanislaus-Moss Point winner advances to the Class 4A South State finals next Friday facing the Lawrence County-Vancleave winner.  Vancleave entertains Lawrence County tonight in Jackson County, looking to ring up another playoff victory. The Bulldogs (6-7) have won four straight games and battle a Cougars football team that has won 12 of 13 games. Lawrence County needed to overtimes to defeat East Central last Friday 26-20.

Unbeaten and top-ranked Resurrection (11-0) is on the road at Stringer tonight in the Class 1A South State semifinals.  The Eagles flew past Stringer 29-0 during the regular season. Defense and more defense has been the name of the game for Resurrection.  Coach Scott Sisson's defensive unit has posted seven shutouts this season.
