Hotel developers eyeing Pass Christian

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -

It's an exciting step in Pass Christian's post-Katrina recovery: Mayor Chipper McDermott announced Thursday morning that a hotel developer has his eyes on property at the northwest corner of Market and Scenic.

Speaking at the Second Cup chamber event, the mayor told chamber members the hotel will fly the Hampton Inn flag, and likely have 82 rooms. While final details for the development are still being negotiated, a second hotel developer is also looking at Pass Christian.

According to Mayor McDermott, hotels haven’t looked at Pass Christian in 75 years. He hopes that once the Hampton Inn comes out of the ground, it will jumpstart development on the west side of downtown Pass Christian. In recent years, almost all of Pass Christian’s retail development has been on the east end of downtown.

The city is also making a million dollars worth of capital investments. Pass Christian will buy a street sweeper, back hoes and other equipment to help public works employees enhance the city. The capital expenditures include money for a splash pad. Where to put that splash pad remains an unanswered question.

Full-time Waveland city workers, primarily police officers, who take-home vehicles outside of the city limits could see a change to the city's policy soon. City leaders said the current policy is antiquated and needs to be rewritten into something that would benefit both the officers and the taxpayers.
