MS Power submits plan for permanent rates associated with Kemper plant

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) -

Mississippi Power has formally filed its plan for how much customers will pay for its Kemper County plant. Last week, the company told the Mississippi Public Service Commission the Kemper rate increase would be between 13 and 15 percent instead of the 18 percent currently on bills.

Mississippi Power will also give a one-time $22 credit.

“We view the agreement reached with the Public Utilities Staff as a positive step in reaching certainty on the Kemper assets already in service and providing customers with safe, economic and reliable electricity for more than a year,” said Mississippi Power CEO Ed Holland.  “If adopted by the Commission, we believe the agreement would provide us a path forward to regain access to the credit markets and begin to reestablish the financial viability of our company.”

The deal must be approved by the PSC. The power company expects the commission to reach a decision by Dec. 8.
