MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

A new Public Safety Center will break ground in Moss Point soon. The Moss Point Board of Alderman recently approved a construction contract for a new police department.

The new facility will cost an estimated $4 million, according to city officials. The project is being funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and grants.

Officials said about $1.5 million was borrowed for the project without any tax increases or impact on city.

City officials say the current station is antiquated, cramped and it's located in a flood zone. The station also sustained major damage during Hurricane Katrina.

“We’ve been waiting for this for a long time. We had a lot of stumbling blocks, but thank God we are finally able to say there will be a new Public Safety Center in Moss Point,” said Moss Point Mayor Billy Broomfield.

The new police station is expected to have larger, more modern dispatch, courtroom and training areas. It will also include two holding cells, one male and one female.

Prisoners will be housed at the new Jackson County Adult Detention Center, which opened in October.

Broomfield says the new facility will be built next to the fire department on Bellview Street. The project will be completed by Orocon Construction, a Biloxi based company.

Construction was expected to start earlier this year in August, but Broomfield has confirmed work will begin on Dec. 1. Officials said they expect to have the building completed by December of next year.
