St. Martin head coach Gina Bell was in the gym Monday afternoon making sure her Lady Jackets fine tune their offensive and defensive schemes.
So far so good...running off 4 straight wins.
6-foot senior Savannah Jones has been the spark plug for St. Martin. She's netting 25.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Last Wednesday Jones inked a basketball scholarship with South Alabama.
Jones said, "I chose South Alabama because it's close to home. I felt comfortable with the coach."
"She's our team leader, "stated coach Bell. "She works hard. I was telling someone just the other day that we have to force her out of the gym. She just loves basketball. She knows what to do with the ball, when to do it."
Daphane White brings plenty of height to the St. Martin starting lineup. The sophomore stands 6-feet-3 inches and is pulling down 13.3 rebounds per game along with 10 points an outing.
Can the Lady Jackets contend for the Region 4-6A title?
"I think so, "said Bell. "I think we've got big things ahead of us. We've got to come together. We've got basically a new team and I think once we mesh, I think we're going to be OK."
Senior guard Deona Morgan gives St. Martin another offensive weapon, netting 8 points per game and 3.5 assists. Ashley Pham has the ability to strike from long range.
St. Martin has all the ingredients to make plenty of noise in the Class 6A ranks.
