PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Pascagoula Main Street is pushing extra hard to convince mom and pop stores that participating in Small Business Saturday can boost their holiday sales. So far, the business owners seem to be taking the advice.

Kellye Rushton opened Glitt'r Bugz Boutique four years ago and said advertising for her Pascagoula shop has been difficult and expensive.

"The challenges are getting the word out to everyone that we're here. We still have people who pass by every day and don't realize that we're here,” said Rushton.

American Express offers small business owners free marketing support to draw more shoppers on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Pascagoula Main Street made a point this year to get more people registered for the credit card company's Small Business Saturday campaign.

"Probably 30 plus. That's really good because when we first started, I guess about two years ago, there were only a hand full. Maybe three or four that even knew about it,” said Rebecca Davis, Main Street director.

Main Street officials say people need to realize the importance of where they spend their money.

"I don't think the general public gets or really understands the shop small or shop local, and how it affects our community. Our small businesses are the heartbeat of our community. They bring in most of the tax dollars that help our city,” Davis said.

Rushton is participating in Small Business Saturday for the first time.

"Just by shopping local it helps our community. We can build lasting relationships with our customers,” said Rushton.

Pascagoula Main Street officials said they are hoping more businesses go online and register for Small Business Saturday over the next few days so they can receive their materials in time.
