Friday Night Football Showdown: Full slate of Playoff games

Last Friday all four teams in the Region 8-4A ranks opened the first-round of the playoffs with victories.  That means St. Stanislaus, East Central, Vancleave and Moss Point kickoff the second-round tonight.

The Region 8-4A champion Rockachaws travel to Poplarville after taking out Quitman 47-20 last week.  Last season Poplarville defeated St. Stanislaus to win the region title.  The Hornets moved into another region this season and picked up a first-round playoff win beating McComb 21-20 last week.  Rockachaws head coach Bill Conides said his team has been looking forward to playing Poplarville since losing to the Hornets in 2014.

East Central travels to Lawrence County.  Moss Point is on the road at North Pike and Vancleave has the home field advantage hosting Purvis.  The Bulldogs second-round Class 4A playoff game will be one of the six featured games on the Friday Night Football Showdown.

Region 4-6A champion Gulfport takes a 9-2 record against the 6 and 5 Meridian Wildcats.  The Admirals battle the Wildcats at Milner Stadium where running back Dion Cole should get his chances to run the ball against the Meridian defensive front line.

Besides the Meridian-Gulfport showdown, the Friday Night Football Showdown will spotlight the Petal at Harrison Central Class 6A playoff game in Lyman.  Petal defeated Gulfport early in the season.  The 6 and 6 Red Rebels defeated Ocean Springs 28-24 to grab the No. 2 seed in the Region 4-6A ranks last Friday.  Quarterback Tavis Williams has come on strong of late.  Williams rushed for 195 yards in the win over the Greyhounds and ripped off touchdown runs of 75 and 61 yards.

In other Class 6A playoff games Ocean Springs faces a tough challenge on the road at Oak Grove and D'Iberville travels to Brandon.

Region 4-5A champion Pearl River Central captured its first district championship since 1995.  The 10 and 1 Blue Devils entertain Natchez in Carriere coming off a 41-14 win over Picayune.  It was the first win over the Maroon Tide in 20 years.  The Natchez-PRC game will be another game to be featured on the Friday Night Football Showdown.

Picayune, riddled with injured players, travels to Wayne County looking to upend the War Eagles on the road. In another Class 5A playoff game, Hattiesburg is at Laurel.

The Resurrection Eagles captured the Region 4-1A championship and tackle Sebastopol at Gautier High School in a first-round playoff game.  The Eagles are undefeated at 10-0 and you can watch game highlights of this playoff game on the Friday Night Football Showdown beginning at 10:15 on WLOX-ABC/CBS, followed by the Post Game Show on

Christian Collegiate Academy has the home field advantage in Gulfport.  The unbeaten Bulldogs host Kemper Academy.  The winner advances to the M-A-I-S championship game at Mississippi College on Thursday at 10 a.m.
