Gulfport student donates 'Buddy Bench' to help others feel welcome

A Gulfport fourth grader made a donation to her school she hopes will bring an end to bullying.

Marissa Wingerter donated a "Buddy Bench" to Bayou View Elementary. Students who don't have anyone to play with, or just want to make new friends, can sit on the Buddy Bench. Other students are encouraged to invite classmates sitting on the bench to play with them.

Kona Ice paid for the bench, and Marissa and her friends painted it. She made the donation on Friday because it's World Kindness Day.

"It feels really good to be a buddy to everyone and to tell people this is what being friends is how you make new friends and how we make the world a better place," Marissa Wingerter said.

"I think this bench will be great in stopping bullying at our schools and anytime students are out here at recess, they'll always be reminded that being a buddy instead of a bully should always be the road that they choose," Heather Chesman Bayou View Elementary Assistant Principal.

The students also signed a pledge to be a "Buddy Bench Friend."
