Officials exploring housing options at USM Gulf Park

School officials are exploring the possibility of housing students at the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park campus.

USM announced Thursday it has appointed a committee that will participate in a study to evaluate opportunities and potential challenges of adding student housing to its campus in Long Beach.

A release from the school cited recent questions brought to the university about the possibility of building residential facilities for students on the campus as one of the driving forces behind this development.

The committee is comprised of 11 individuals, including community leaders and persons connected with the university. Among those are Biloxi City Attorney Gerald Blessey, Long Beach Mayor William Skellie, USM's director of student housing and other faculty members from the university.

The study is set to start in January, and officials say work will continue until the study is complete. The committee will then share its recommendations.

Officials say they hope to be transparent throughout the process.
