GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Around 200 students and faculty members paused Wednesday as the Jeff Davis Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College hosted a tribute to all the men and women who've served their country.

Sacrifice, service and a sense of honor were all remembered at a Veterans Day ceremony. Music and memories made many hearts swell with patriotism, and moved some attendees to tears.

"I think part of the emotion comes from my deep family connection and then also because of my students. I know so many of my students who've sacrificed so much," said MGCCC Instructor Dr. Janey Mattina.

Major General Mark Brown spoke of the need to honor those who've answered their country's call to duty and how they paid the price for our freedom.

"They are ordinary men and women with extraordinary faith and courage," said Brown.

Many veterans in the crowd felt deeply touched by the tribute.

"I saw a couple of other veterans walk off, or stepped to the side, that were crying or brought to tears. It's nice to be acknowledged. It's nice to get a thank you," said William Graffree, who served in the Army from 2010 to 2014.

The ceremony ended with a pledge to never forget.

"I think Veterans Day is just a beautiful day and I think a lot of people on the coast have really sacrificed their lives for us and I think a lot of people take for granted," said Hensley.
