Five years after the BP oil spill disaster, new studies suggest half of the 172 million gallons spilled may still be on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. A new study from the University of Georgia says those oil dispersants applied to the oil actually slowed down the oil bio degradation.
It seems to us, that the more we learn about this oil spill and the response to it, the more we realize how ill equipped everyone is to deal with oil spills.
If 10s of millions of gallons of oil are still on the the gulf floor, we really don't know the long term impact.
We agree that monitoring and studying what went wrong must continue, so that any future spill anywhere in the world is handled much better. Because it appears the BP spill is a clear example on what not to do.
