PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

After a 15 year renovation project, the Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula will be lit this Friday, November 13. The lighthouse, which is located at the foot of the bridge over the Pascagoula River, will also be open to the public for the first time in more than a decade.

“We are very much looking forward to seeing people visiting and enjoying the lighthouse,” said Community and Economic Development Director, Jen Dearman. “To open the doors after all this time and effort is a dream come true.”

The Round Island Lighthouse will be open regularly on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. starting this week. Adult admission is $2 and children get in for $1. The lighthouse was built in 1859 and was in operation until 1944. It was officially taken out of service in 1954. Hurricanes Georges and Katrina damaged the lighthouse. The exterior of the lighthouse was completed in 2013. Landscaping and paving are close to completion. Sponsorships are still available. Keepsake tiles cost $12 and include a remnant brick from the original 1859 lighthouse. Inscribed pieces that will be placed at the lighthouse start at $50 to $500.

For sponsorship information call 228-938-6639.

The ceremony begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and the lighthouse will be lit around sunset. The free tours this Friday end at 6 p.m.
