JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

An Ocean Springs resident is the first in the state to receive a Professional Port Manager (PPM) certification. Michael A. Smith is the port engineer and manager of utilities for the Jackson County Port Authority.

Smith recently graduated from the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) PPM program.

The four year curriculum teaches candidates to build relationships, gain practical experience and strengthen professional credentials.

Smith has been employed with the Jackson County Port Authority since 1998. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering and has a professional engineering license from Mississippi and Alabama.

He currently resides in Ocean Springs with his wife and two sons.
