SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

The rain over the weekend has delayed the start of oyster season. The 2015-2016 season was set to open Tuesday at sunrise, but water samples taken Monday by the Department of Marine Resources show conditions are not right to open to allow harvesting to begin.

The DMR will take more samples on Tuesday with the hope of opening the season on Wednesday.

When the season does open, the commercial daily limit for tonging is seven sacks, and the daily commercial limit for dredging is 10 sacks. The limit for recreational harvesters is three sacks per licensed resident in a seven-day period.

Oystermen can get updates by calling the 24-hour Oyster Information Hotline at 228-374-5167 or 1-800-385-5902.
