OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Rain or shine, the 37th annual Peter Anderson Festival in Ocean Springs was going to happen.

Hundreds of arts and crafts vendors got an early start Saturday morning setting up for the big art-filled weekend.

"There's a lot of hope going into it not raining today," said Jason Stokes.

Stokes' family has been a part of the festival for the last 35 years, traveling all the way from Florida for the event.

"I grew up in the business," said Stokes. "My parents started in 1978."

According to Stokes, his family takes about three months in advance to prepare for the art show and every year brings a new experience.

"It's our biggest show of the year, so that's what we mostly look forward to," Stokes stated. "And then just coming down again and meeting everybody year in and year out."

Local and out-of-town shoppers look forward to seeing other shoppers, too, even if there is a chance they'll get a little wet.

"No, it's not going to stop anybody. They'll be here in the rain," Ocean Springs resident Raymond Egers stated confidently. "They'll either use umbrellas or go under tents and be back when it slows down, or else be in the rain when it slows down."

Luckily, shoppers also had the opportunity to shop indoors.

"It's the biggest festival of the year for us. We have a ball!" said Gayle Jones, the owner of Poppy's. "We see the same people every year. I look forward to seeing them, they look forward to seeing what's new at Poppy's and we just have a good time."

"The originals, this is my Christmas shopping event and just the excitement of this place.," said Cheryl Briggs, who is visiting from Washington. "Ocean Springs is just wonderful! It's just the best little time."

And Briggs says she's not going to end her trips to South Mississippi any time soon, no matter the weather.

"Oh,absolutely," said Briggs. "I've got my umbrella, but I live north of Seattle so it rains all the time. So rain doesn't bother us."

If you missed the start of the big art show, you still have time to go Sunday. The fun begins again at 9 a.m. and lasts until 5 p.m.
