The 2015 high school football season has been exciting and the excitement continues tonight at 7 along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
St. Stanislaus opens the Class 4A playoffs in the Bay tonight. The Region 8-4A champs entertain Quitman in an opening round game. The Rockachaws under head coach Bill Conides played a tough non-district schedule and posted a 7-3 overall record. Coach Conides wanted his team to face stiff competition and in effort to prepare them for the playoffs. Last season the Rockachaws got beat in the Class 4A title game losing to Noxubee County.
East Central road the legs of running back A.J. Davis to grab the No. 2 seed behind St. Stanislaus in the Region 8-4A ranks. Davis rushed over 2,300 yards and crossed the goal line 20 times. The Hornets have the home field advantage tonight in Hurley hosting Northeast Jones.
Vancleave was the No. 3 seed in the Region 8-4A standings and open the playoffs on the road at Mendenhall and Moss Point will lineup against West Lauderdale, looking for a road playoff victory.
Poplarville also opens the Class 4A playoffs traveling to McComb.
Gulfport already wrapped up the Region 4-6A title and will close out the regular season at Biloxi in the annual Admirals-Indians rivalry. Gulfport has run off an 8-2 record, 6-0 in the region standings. The Indians (3-7) will try ending a three-game win streak by the Admirals, but the assignment will be difficult. Gulfport has a solid run game and defensive unit, led by Dion Cole. He has rushed for 1,400 yards with 11 touchdowns.
Ocean Springs travels to Lyman, facing the home standing Harrison Central Red Rebels. The Greyhounds (8-2, 5-1) have already locked-up a playoff spot while Harrison Central(5-6, 4-2) can secure a playoff spot by beating Ocean Springs. The Red Rebels could also secure the No. 2 seed by beating Ocean Springs and have D'Iberville knock off St. Martin.
The D'Iberville Warriors (5-6, 3-3) travel to St. Martin (8-2, 4-2) in a must-win situation to crack the Class 6A playoffs. The Yellow Jackets are hoping to finally beat D'Iberville and with so many offensive weapons, this could be the year St. Martin takes down the Warriors. However, in rivalry games anything can happen.
Pearl River Central(9-1, 6-0) is the Region 4-5A champs and will have the home field advantage in the opening round of the playoffs next week. The Blue Devils will close out the regular season against arch-rival Picayune (5-5, 4-2). Win or lose, the Maroon Tide have already punched their ticket to the playoffs.
Pascagoula (7-3, 5-1) is the No. 2 seed in the Region 4-5A ranks and will entertain Gautier (5-5, 3-3) at War Memorial Stadium. The Gators need a win over the Panthers and Stone must beat Hattiesburg for Gautier to gain the fourth and final playoff spot in the Region 4-5A ranks.
Stone needs at least a 6-point victory over Hattiesburg and Pascagoula must defeat Gautier and the Tomcats can secure the No. 4 seed in the region and would be off to the playoffs next week.
Resurrection will attempt to close out an undefeated season at 10-0 hosting Salem at Gautier High School. The Eagles are the Region 4-1A champs.
Undefeated Christian Collegiate Academy opens the MAIS playoffs at home in Gulfport. The Bulldogs face North Sunflower Academy.
