ST TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WLOX) -

A Gulfport man is accused of being behind the wheel of a pickup truck that caused the chain reaction wreck that killed a truck driver Tuesday night on Interstate 10. Thursday, authorities arrested Daniel Alex Coy, 25, and charged him with hit-and-run, reckless operation and negligent homicide. Coy was being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center awaiting extradition to Louisiana.

Thursday night, crews returned to the scene of the deadly accident to remove the submerged 18-wheeler from the Pearl River. The truck crashed through the concrete barrier and into the river late Tuesday night, killing its driver, Steven Shawn Clark, 26, of Theodore, AL. Divers pulled Clark's body from the cab of the truck Wednesday morning.

According to Louisiana State Police, the wreck happened when a dark colored pickup truck tried to pass another 18-wheeler on the right shoulder of the interstate, but ran out of room. The pickup truck hit the front of the second 18-wheeler, forcing it into the left lane, and into Clark’s truck. LSP said that’s when Clark’s 18-wheeler plunged into the river. The pickup truck fled the scene westbound toward Slidell, LA.

Don Moreland, co-owner of ASAP Towing, said his crews will work Thursday night to remove the truck, which is sitting in about 15 feet of water. The tractor trailer still contains the 45,000 pounds of paper products it was hauling.

Moreland said crews will use a 65-ton rotator, a 40-ton heavy duty wrecker and a 70,000-pound excavator.

"We’re hoping to get it done without lane closures. There’s no guarantee of that, but that’s our goal," Moreland said.
