OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Merchants in downtown Ocean Springs have a feeling of high anticipation. The reason why? The Peter Anderson Arts Festival is two days away.

As many as 150,000 people are expected to cram the downtown streets for the two day festival, which begins Saturday morning.

An economic impact study conducted by Mississippi State a few years ago estimated a total of $23 million is generated by the event. However, another impact study will be done by Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast this year to get an even better gauge on what happens during the festival.

In addition to the downtown shops, more than 400 vendors will be set up on the streets. Store owners and managers we talked with today say Peter Anderson is one of the biggest weekends they have all year, and it contributes mightily to the business bottom line.

They said even if the browsers don't buy anything, the word-of-mouth advertising is priceless.

Doug Walker is covering the story and will have more later today on WLOX News and on WLOX.com.
