GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Voters in George County have decided who will be their next sheriff. Republican R. Keith Havard, the candidate who took down incumbent Dean Howell in the August primary election, defeated Independent Dondee Hartley and Democrat L.C. Fairley in Tuesday's general election to become the county's next sheriff.
Havard, 50, lives in the Barton community of George County and has 22 years of law enforcement experience.
He has served as a patrol and investigations supervisor with the Ocean Springs Police Department. He also served on the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and as commander of the South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team.
Havard is an Army veteran who earned a combat award for valor in Operation Desert Storm.
