OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Leaders in one coast city have made a move to maintain trees and public property.
The Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen adopted a resolution Tuesday establishing the Ethelyn Connor Save Our Trees Beautification Fund. The program is designed for private businesses and citizens to donate funds exclusively for planting and maintaining public trees and beautifying public property within the city.
Mayor Connie Moran said it is a fitting tribute for Mrs. Connor.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to honor the memory of Mrs. Ethelyn Connor, who for decades was a strong advocate for beautification and the preservation of our Ocean Springs history," said Mayor Moran.
Mrs. Ethelyn Connor worked through her life for the beautification and historic heritage of her community. She planted hundreds of oak trees throughout the city of Ocean Springs. She was responsible for planting live oak trees along U.S. 90 in memory of her husband, Mayor Donald "Pat" Connor.
The mayor presented a copy of the Board's resolution creating the fund to Mrs. Connor's grandsons, Craig and Brian Joachim. On behalf of their family, they presented a check to the City for the first private donation to the fund. Moran encouraged the community to donate to the cause.
"We encourage our businesses and citizens to consider a donation to this fund to enhance our ability to care for our historic trees and beautify our community," said Moran.
The City's Building and Planning Department will administer the fund in accordance with municipal and state policy regulations.
