GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

USM's oceanographic research vessel Point Sur made a brief stop at the Port of Gulfport Tuesday. The 135 foot ship is in the midst of oil spill related research in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Students and scientists onboard have been studying water flow conditions and the transport of plankton through the water column. The research will help scientists better understand how the movement of water affects various marine life. The work can also be applied to help determine how oil or other materials might travel through the water during a variety of conditions.

Coastal river flow into the gulf waters is also part of the equation. This time of year, that flow is normally at its lowest point. However, the recent impact from the hurricane which swept over Mexico meant heavy rainfall, which added to the freshwater in the northern gulf.
