On June 6, 2015 the Biloxi Shuckers began playing in the newly opened MGM Park in downtown Biloxi. The Shuckers were forced to play their first 54 games on the road while MGM Park was still under construction and local baseball fans anticipated the season home opener.
5,065 fans would witness a magical win. It would take 14 innings before Nick Shaw stepped up to the plate and delivered a game winning single that drove home Shuckers reliever and pinch-runner Brent Sutter from second base to finish off a two-run bottom of the 14th inning 5-4 win over the Mobile Baybears.
The thriller was selected as Minor League Baseball Game of the Year.
The Shuckers would eventually close out a Southern League-best 78 wins and would capture the South Division Championship.
The Baybears-Shuckers June 6 game earned the honor over Triple-A Louisville's combined no-hitter on July 12 against Toledo; Double-A Arkansas' 15-12 win over Springfield on June 13, which included a 14-run fifth inning; Triple-A Toldeo's 10-8 loss to Lehigh Valley on August 3 that featured Mike Hessman's go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning that set the new minor league home run record; Tony Gwynn Jr's walk-off single which earned Triple-A Syracuse a 1-0 win over Buffalo on Father's Day, almost a year to the date of his father's (Tony Gwynn) passing.
More honors could be coming the Shuckers way. The Shuckers are in the running for "Best Team." which will be announced on Wednesday and "Breakout Prospect" for Orlando Arcia, which will be announced on Tuesday. Brett Phillips was nominated for "Best Offensive Player."
The Shuckers and the Milwaukee Brewers, Biloxi's parent club, will compete in an exhibition game on April 2, 2016 at MGM Park. The Shuckers will open the 2016 Southern League season at MGM Park on April 7 against the Chattanooga Lookouts.
