OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - In just one week, thousands of people will converge on Ocean Springs for the annual Peter Anderson Festival. It's one of the premiere arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast, and coast artists, like Yvonne Brown, are getting ready for the show. Brown is a seasoned potter, and no stranger to the festival.
"It's really inspiring. It helps me keep going and find new ways to express my art," said Brown.
For 18 years, Brown has been selling her beautifully handcrafted works painted in vibrant coastal colors at the Peter Anderson Festival. As the show draws near, she's getting excited to set up shop.
"It's one of my best shows of the year. I don't do many anymore, kids and all, but it's definitely my best show for the year," said Brown.
This makes year 37 for the downtown Ocean Springs arts and crafts show that attracts thousands of artists and even more attendants to the coast city.
"A lot of people come just for the show, from out of town, that I haven't seen in a long time, or that used to live on the coast that have moved away. They come back for Peter Anderson," said Brown.
For Brown, seeing all the familiar faces is part of what makes it so special. Although the vendors stay busy selling their work, they usually make time to meet and greet, sometimes even trade work.
"I like seeing all the artists that I haven't seen for a year, say hi and catch up and see their work and see what they've been doing for the past year," said Brown.
Year after year, attendance seems to climb, and Brown understands. She says most of the artists, like herself, spend countless hours crafting their work, and the patrons are big fans. Many of them even growing to become collectors of a particular artist.
"It's really good art and the setting… I mean, Ocean Springs is a nice place to visit and walk around and hopefully the weather will be good," said Brown.
The Peter Anderson Festival is November 7-8, from 9am to 5pm each day.
