PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Panthers head coach Ronald Norman is a winner...entering his third season at Pascagoula.
He's earned that label thanks to his won-loss record.
In his first two seasons, 44 wins, 20 ,losses, back-to-back Region 4-5A titles, lost to Vicksburg in the 2014 Class 5A State Championship game and lost to Callaway in the 2015 Class 5A State quarterfinals.
The Panthers are now determined to take the next giant step forward.
Coach Norman said, "It's our expectation here at Pascagoula to be great at everything. With that being said, it's our expectation to win the division. It's our expectation to get to Jackson. Now we have to take it a step further and try to accomplish that major goal which is to try to win the State Championship."
Nine seniors headline the 2015-16 Panthers, all having learned the Norman system of excelling on the basketball court. This year's success starts with two solid front line players.
"First and foremost, we're going to start off with our two bigs, Illyan Scott, better known as Chicago and Jacques Belford. Those are our two big guys. They've been with me three years and they're a big part of what we're doing."
Scott is 6'4" and Belford is 6'3". Michael Davis adds more height inside the paint at 6'5". Paris Weathersby will run the Panthers attack from his point guard position giving Pascagoula a playmaker, highly capable of getting the ball inside to the Panthers big men.
Norman said his two previous Pascagoula teams were known for their outside shooting. He says that has changed this season and since he has height, he will take advantage of those big men to pound the ball inside the paint.
Pascagoula opens the 2015-2016 season on the road November 7 at Oak Grove.
