BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton gave kicking specialist Zach Hocker six weeks to secure his job. On Monday Payton decided to give Hocker the boot and thought it was in the teams best interest to go in a different direction.
Hocker was released and the Saints signed veteran kicker Kai Forbath.
Since Payton took over the Saints head coaching duties in 2006, he has gone through ten kickers with the addition of Forbath.
Hocker was 9-of-13 on field goal attempts and had an extra point attempt blocked.
Hocker started his decline when he missed a 30-yard field goal attempt that would have beaten Dallas in regulation.
The Saints won the game in overtime, but during the week after the Dallas game, Payton brought a number of kickers for a tryout.
In Thursday's 31-21 win over the Atlanta Falcons, Hocker missed two field goals and that was all Payton wanted to see.
So who is Kai Forbath?
He had been the Washington Redskins kicker since 2012 and made 60 of 69 field goal attempts and connected on 24-of-27 attempts last season.
However, Forbath missed a 46-yard field goal in the Redskins first week and was released last month.
The Saints (2-4) travel to Indianapolis (3-3) Sunday at high noon.
