BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has closed a section of beach in Biloxi after a force main break sent sewage spewing into the Mississippi Sound.
The section of beach between Miramar Avenue and St. George Avenue will remain closed until bacteria levels reach a safe level.
According to city spokesman Vincent Creel, a resident called in the leak around 10 p.m. Wednesday after hearing water in the storm drain. Creel said the break was caused by an aging sewer line.
The city has repaired the leak, stopped the flow of sewage and is working to repair the system.
MDEQ advises people to stay out of the water and not eat any seafood harvested from this area until further notice.
