HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - More than 10 years after the storm, Katrina debris can still be found scattered throughout the bayous and marsh grasses of Hancock County. Today, a major cleanup of the Clermont Harbor area is removing much of that trash.
The City of Waveland, Hancock County Beautification, Mississippi Power and Coast Electric are involved in the effort.
Reaching deep into the marsh with airboats and swamp buggies, volunteers are removing old boats, household appliances and car parts, among other things.
Not only does the project make the area look better, there are also environmental benefits. A cleaner marsh will better enable that habitat to filter impurities from the water, meaning less problems with pollution.
Steve Phillips will tell you all about the massive cleanup effort tonight. Look for his story on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
