D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

There's a real feeling of optimism in D'Iberville. The city's economy is about to get a huge $300 million boost. That was the message heard Tuesday at a meeting of the D'Iberville-St. Martin Chamber of Commerce.

Briana Dubaz with the Scarlet Pearl summed it up this way.

"It's on progress. We're still shooting for a December opening. It will definitely be before the end of the year,” said Dubaz. “It's beautiful. We've had a chance to go inside and look at everything. It really looks like a casino. It's not just a building anymore.”

In two months, the doors to the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort will open for business. That's what chamber members heard Tuesday morning, and that is welcome news. Sissy Andrews is the chamber president.

“We're very excited about them being here. We're excited about the economic growth that they are bringing, all the jobs that they're bringing and we're just happy that they are here,” Andrews exclaimed.

The impact of the casino is already being felt, according to Jerry Dodge with the Peoples Bank.

“They buy a lot of their things locally. They bank locally. Their people are opening accounts with local banks.  There will be a lot of ad valorem tax increases, more houses rented. It should be a great thing,” Dodge said.

Ted Aycock heard the message. He owns Back Bay Drugs. The Scarlet Pearl could boost his business.

“It's going to mean a lot more people acquainted with the store. Certainly, they are going to need maybe drug needs or toiletry needs, and hopefully they'll come to us. We've got good signage out, and hopefully, we'll be able to attract some of them,” Aycock explained.

A lot of business people in D'Iberville are equating the Scarlet Pearl with the baseball field in the famous movie “Field of Dreams.” They’re basically saying “if you build it, they will come.” Hope Gilson is another business owner.

“It's growing so fast here. It’s unbelievable how many businesses want to come here every day and expand,” Gilson said.

What's very believable is the sense of anticipation that's building in this city.

When it opens, the Scarlet Pearl Casino will offer a 300 room hotel and a world class 36-hole miniature golf course as its non-gaming amenity.

About 1,200 people will be hired to work at the resort.
