HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A 16-year-old student is in custody after bringing a gun to school.
According to the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded to Harrison Central High School where a male student was believed to have a gun. After bringing the student to the office and searching his backpack, officials say they found an unloaded hand gun.
The student told deputies that he brought the firearm to school because of recent school shootings around the country, and that he wanted to protect himself.
At this time, it is not known where the student got the gun. The student was placed under arrest and transported to the Harrison County Juvenile Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
